FAQ of the Week
Hard Drives, SSDs, Flash Drives: How Long Will Your Storage Media Last?
Image from MUO
Each week we will address a frequently asked question. This week we are looking at how long the different storage mediums will last. We will be looking at Hard Drives (HDDs), Solid State Drives (SSDs), and Flash Drives.
A hard drive is likely the first of these storage mediums that will fail first. This is primarily due to their mechanical parts. HDDs also store data magnetically and the data can also be affected or erased by magnets in close proximity to the drive.
Solid State Drives store data on chips and the data is not susceptible to magnets like HDDs. SSDs are more prone to power failure and each chip or memory block has a limited lifespan.
Flash drives are similar in nature to SSDs. However, because these drives are small and portable they are at a higher risk of physical damage or getting lost. Flash drives are not best for long-term storage.
Depending on your needs either an HDD or SSD will be your best option for long-term storage. Check out the linked article for full details.
