Why the name POST? In the world of computers POST stands for Power On Self Test. This is the action computers take when they are first powered on to check their basic functionality prior to loading the operating system. We decided to take this same concept and to provide you with useful technology information at the beginning of your week to help get you started. POST is also a term associated with news as well and we felt this was an appropriate and fitting name.

3 Ways to Test SSD Speed & Performance
Image from MUO
As Solid State Drives, SSDs, become more common and the default choice for new systems it has become even more important to know how to check their speed and performance. This is important for a couple of reasons:
- You don't know what the speed of the drive should be - test new drives.
- The drive is slowing down and you need to compare the speed against the rated speed or the speed you got from #1.
SSDs have also come down in price over the years, so if you need to replace one or want to make your computer faster, getting a new SSD should be relatively inexpensive compared to getting a new computer.

How to Calculate and Check Your Wi-Fi Router Range
Image from MUO
Having a good Wi-Fi range from your router is important. This will determine how much coverage you can get and if you will need to get an extender. You also need to know what is in your environment that will affect the range. I had a client who had an issue with a dead zone in their house (too much interference) and they required getting a range extender to boost the signal to the back of their house.
There are several factors to consider but this actually isn't very complicated to figure out. The placement of your router also matters. Check out the linked article for additional details.
FAQ of the Week
How Much Download Speed Do You Really Need?
Image from How-To Geek
Each week we will address a frequently asked question. This week we are looking at how much download speed you need.
A lot of this will depend on what you are doing online and how many people are sharing the connection. At a minimum, for a single person, I would recommend a download speed between 25-50 Mbps (megabits per second). It is also recommended to add an additional 25 Mbps for each additional person.
You should also pay attention to the upload speed offered with your plan. Usually the more download speed you get the more upload speed you get. A minimum upload speed will be around 10 Mbps.
